That number usually comes from attic-only work on a house that already has some insulation. When you add wall insulation to a pre-1980 Utah home with empty cavities, the payback drops to 9–11 years — and that's using conservative energy price assumptions. We'll show you the math for your specific house before you decide anything.
"My house is older — won't insulation cause moisture problems?"
This is the right question to ask, and most contractors won't give you a straight answer. The honest answer: it depends on the assembly. Brick homes, homes with vapor barriers in the wrong place, and homes with existing moisture issues all need a different approach than a standard 1970s frame house. We assess the assembly first. If there's a moisture risk, we tell you — and we adjust the scope or decline the job.
"I got a quote that was half your price."
We hear this regularly. The most common explanation: the other quote is attic-only, and ours includes walls and rim joist. The second most common: different R-value targets. Ask for the scope in writing — what's being removed, what's being installed, to what R-value, and what air sealing is included. If the scopes are identical and we're still more expensive, we'll tell you to take the other quote.

Probably yes, but the math is different.
